Busways strategic aspirations are amplified by a shift in leadership

Asian Aussie Business | Will O’Neill will take over as CEO of Busways, the biggest bus operator owned by Australians, on January 1, 2025.

With 30 years of expertise in commercial and financial matters, Mr. O’Neill takes up the reins following a decade of excellent leadership at Busways, most notably as Chief Financial Officer and Commercial Officer.

He achieves his goals After seven revolutionary years as Managing Director of the 82-year-old company, Byron Rowe, grandson of founder Dick Rowe, goes on to become Executive Chair of the Busways Board. By doubling its size and expertly handling expansions and tough times, Busways cemented its place as the largest Australian-owned bus operator under Mr. Rowe’s leadership.

Mr. Rowe elaborates on how the change sets Busways up for sustained success.

Our primary goals throughout this transition are to fortify Busways and prepare for our future endeavors. According to Mr. Rowe, Busways has a solid team and a well-defined strategy.

Mr. O’Neill expresses his eagerness to take the lead in the company and position Busways for future growth.

Because of this, Busways might be considered a success story in Australia. The Sydney metropolitan area was the most difficult and competitive market in Australia in the 1970s, with around 40 private bus operators. Even though we only cover 20% of the market, Busways is the only one left.

Executive leadership, corporate finance, and strategic planning are areas in which Will O’Neill has excelled for over 30 years. He has held top positions in advisory firms such as KPMG. He has advised governments and corporations across several industries on complicated, high-impact projects, and has also led them.

As Busways grows and innovates in the public transportation industry, this shift in leadership is a logical next step.
